The incident took place around noon Wednesday when both Bridgeport resident Frederico Davis and Connecticut Conservation Police Officer John Hey witnessed a two-car motor vehicle accident in the area of the Black Rock Turnpike overpass, said officials with the Fairfield Fire Department.

As a result of the crash, one of the vehicle's began filling with smoke as it burned. Davis and Hey jumped into action and removed the semi-conscious driver from the vehicle before life-threating injuries could occur, the department said.

“It was the quick action by the Bridgeport resident and the uniformed Conservation Police Officer working together that definitely saved this woman from the toxic smoke, burn injuries and possibly losing her life”, says Fairfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir. “Luckily, the second vehicle involved in the collision did not have any reported injuries.”

Fairfield Fire Department units responded and arrived eight minutes after receiving the call and the fire was extinguished quickly.

EnCon police posted on their Facebook page: “EnCon Police Officer John Hey heroically saved a woman’s life after she was involved in a motor vehicle collision on I-95 in Fairfield. Officer Hey has proudly served with our Department for over 30 years. Thank you, Officer Hey, for your quick thinking and courageous actions!”

Additional agencies on scene were the Connecticut State Police, American Medical Response for pre-hospital assessment and care and the CT Department of Transportation assisting with traffic flow.
